An NMLS number is a unique identifying number assigned to mortgage officers and financial institutions. In order to offer residential mortgage loans, mortgage officers and financial institutions have to go through a process to get an NMLS number, which stays with the financial institution and follows the mortgage officer no matter which financial institution they work for.
